Pietermaritzburg is a great location for enthusiasts of off-road cycling.
The city has just hosted the Msunduzi Road Challenge and those on South Africa holidays looking for a bit of adventure should make their way to the area.
Its mixture of wide open spaces and rich history has combined to make it the recreational cycling capital of the country.
Sugen Pillay, global manager of events at South African Tourism, observed hosting the event "helps to enhance South Africa's status as a global sports tourism destination".
According to the body, visitors to the area will be able to take advantage of the "rugged terrain [and] mountainous regions".
The Msunduzi Road Challenge – part of the UCI World Cycling Tour – saw riders cover up to 126km.
As well as this, the 2013 Mountain Bike World Championships will also be held at Pietermaritzburg, which is the second biggest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
