Places to include in a classic Zimbabwe itinerary

Zimbabwe is full of natural wonders and wildlife that is just waiting to be discovered. There are a few destinations that should be included on your Zimbabwe Itinerary, these include Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park and Lake Kariba.

Victoria Falls

The UNESCO World Heritage Site defines the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. As the largest waterfall in the world with a length of more than a kilometre, it is known locally as the ‘smoke that thunders’ due to mist and spray that rises from the water smashing into the pool below. This can be seen from over 50 kilometres away.

The falls attract millions of tourists every year. As one of the most world renown sites, there is a range of activities which you can undertake, most of which will get your adrenaline pumping. You can try white-water rafting down the Zambezi River where the power of the water is not as rapid and powerful allowing you to have a safe heart racing experience. Other options include a bungee jump and a hike to the natural pool at the edge of the cliff, giving you the most spectacular views of water billowing down the hundred-meter drop.

Hwange National Park

As the biggest national park in Zimbabwe, it is home to some of the most remarkable wildlife Africa has got to offer. Animals can be found all over the 1.4 million hectares’ site. The diverse area includes woodland, flora, desert and rivers. Because of the range of habitats that suits a long list of animals you can find, Elephants, Lions, Giraffes, Wildebeest, Rhinos and Impalas living in the national park.

Hwange offers a variety of hotel and safari options whether you’re looking to participate in a 4×4 safari allowing you to see a large amount of the park in little time and hopefully a significant amount of wildlife. As well as this option, you can also take part in a walking safari in which you track animals on foot giving it a much more personal feel. Lake Kariba

If you’re looking for something a bit different why not try a trip on a houseboat on Lake Kariba. The tranquillity of watching the sun sink over one side of Africa’s largest man made dam and the moon rising from the other to reflect and shimmer on the steady waters provides for breath-taking views.

The Lake provides the perfect water sports playground. You can try water skiing or even just go for a leisure swim. If you’re looking for something a bit more relaxing why not a fishing trip? Over the past few years, fishing has improved significantly with more and more fish being attracted to the rich waters of the lake. Some of the main catches to be found within include tiger fish and bream.
