The national carrier of the Rainbow Nation, South African Airways (SAA) has recently partnered with DO & CO Event and Airline Catering Ltd and now serves gourmet meals as part of a newly launched menu on London to Johannesburg flights.
Available throughout business and economy classes, the new on-board menu will improve the culinary experiences that travellers can expect while airborne, not to mention the sampling of world renowned South African wines at 30,000 feet.
It has been a positive period for the Star Alliance member airline that this week scooped the award for the ‘World’s Best Business Class Airline Catering’ at the 2014 Skytrax World Airline Awards ceremony.
For travellers mulling over tailor-made South Africa holidays or vacations to alternative destinations for that matter, airline food is stereotypically viewed as a sub-standard commodity but dishes upon SAAs new menu are all handmade, featuring authentic ingredients from the Rainbow Nation.
Eats such as Loch Fyne Scottish Smoked Salmon and Avocado Chocolate Mouse are available in business class while Viennese Paprika Chicken and Rigatoni with Rosemary sauce add a flavoursome essence to the economy menu.
Focusing in on SAAs culinary excellence, the airline’s Senior Food and Beverage Manager, Bongi Sodladla noted “I assess the ability of the food and the wine to maintain flavour and shine at even 30,000 feet, as our taste buds may be dulled by up to 30 per cent when flying.
“We taste over 300 wines each day, for three days and rate them out of 100. Only the very best wines from South Africa make it on board, with a selection of 60 wines on a monthly rotation.”
