The lively city of Johannesburg – or Jozi to the locals – is a great place to visit on your South Africa holiday. If you’re in town for the briefest of visits there are some must-sees to obtain a great view of the city on your whirlwind itinerary.
To gain an unparalleled view of the city, make your first stop the Carlton Centre in central Johannesburg where you can visit the observation deck on the 50th floor. It offers sweeping views of the city and the local area from what is colloquially known as ‘the top of Africa’.
The city is home to some great museums and galleries where you can learn more about South Africa’s history and culture.
The revered Apartheid Museum tells the story of the controversial regime and the history of 20th century South Africa and is a fascinating and unflinching view of the recent past.
Johannesburg Art Gallery owns a large collection of South African European art, ranging from the 15th century to the modern day, so there is something for all tastes. It champions local art and black artists so it is well worth a trip to learn more about the country’s culture.
If you want to get outside or are with some younger travellers, pay a visit to Johannesburg Zoo. One of the largest in South Africa, it is home to about 2000 animals and has a strong reputation for conservation.
If you fancy the idea of witnessing some of Africa’s native wildlife up close without going on a safari, you can spot rhinos, tigers, white lions, hyenas and hippos, amongst others, from the comfort of the park.
Maybe not one for young children but the SAB World of Beer is hugely popular. A 90 minute trip through the history of beer from a Bavarian brewery to a re-created Victorian boozer, your ticket even includes two pints in their bar at the end of the tour!
As the sun goes down there are plenty of dining and entertainment options in Johannesburg. The Market Theatre, Civic Theatre and Wits Theatre Complex boast a wide range of entertainment if you fancy catching a show, or for a more relaxed evening, the city centre houses a great selection of bars and restaurants, with many incorporating live music – a great way to round off your stay in Johannesburg.
